Gas-priming as a novel simple method of seed treatment with ethylene, hydrogen cyanide or nitric oxide

Abstract The gases used: ethylene (C 2 H 4 ), hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and nitric oxide (NO) showed a high activity as inductors of germination in primary dormant or non-dormant seeds exposed to stress suboptimal temperatures. So far, research on the role ethylene, has involved these during seed germination. This work describes gas-priming novel method for treating air dry genus Amaranthus serving model. Effects C , HCN NO applied were similar those obtained when used an identical period time. Application presents new opportunity study constrain effects from time 0. prolonged treatment (24 h) is convenient because if started morning, there sufficient next day further experiments begin, e.g. test water solutions other compounds. Moreover, it important that gas-treated can be stored transported prior use. allows prepare treated samples which either immediately after storage open closed container. Gas-priming with simple useful air-dried seeds, opens up possibilities basic releasing dormancy various plant species. In addition, may prove very horticulture agriculture improving gas-sensitive seeds.
